Comprised of Juilliard-trained pianists Francesco Tristano and Rami Khalifé as well as drummer Aymeric Westrich, the trio explores the line between avant-garde modern classical and four-to-the-floor drumming. The conception of the group stems back to 2005, when both Jeff Mills and a booker for Sonar festival were present at one of Francesco’s performances at an art gallery in Barcelona. After playing his normal set, Rami joined him to run through an adapted version of “The Bells,” with Mills quickly putting a swift word in to get them booked immediately.

“It’s neither acoustic techno nor electronically seasoned classical music, like Wendy Carlos,” explains Tristano, who has previously collaborated with the likes of Carl Craig and Christian Prommer. The record spans from acid-influenced pieces (“Ausgang”) through to the dissonant flurry of “Channel 8,” and although it may work better as a home listen, there are also a few club-friendly tracks that could potentially do some damage on more open-minded dance floors.
